PANTHERS (U-18 BOYS)
BETHESDA, MARYLAND TOURNAMENT

November 18, 2012 - The LMSC Panthers U18 Boys extended their Bethesda Tournament winning streak into 2012, coming out on top of their bracket with a record of 2-0-1. On Friday 11/15, the Panthers were opposed by the Alleycats Pumas, an impressively ranked squad from New York East. Musa Kamara gave the Panthers a healthy 1-0 lead, but the Alleycats equalized shortly after, when a very questionable handball call gave the New Yorkers a penalty shot. The Panthers maintained possession throughout the second half, but had difficulty finding the net, until Kevin Lawson surprised the keeper on a free kick, giving the Panthers the 2-1 lead that they finished with and fully deserved.

Saturday's game occurred early on a frost-coated field. The Panthers faced Cherry Hill FC Phoenix, hailing from New Jersey. Though they dominated the game and had mountains more skill than their opponents, the Panthers had a hard time hitting the back of the net. The game stayed tied at zero despite many opportunities until the dying minutes of the game. Alex Buckman plowed down the sideline and received an overlapping ball, which he cut back to rid himself of a defender. He then proceeded to play a beautiful weak-footed cross, which found its way perfectly to the foot of Joseph Aidoo, who slotted it away with composure. The 1-0 lead held up, giving the Panthers their second consecutive win.

Sunday's game was the Panthers' opportunity to end the tournament atop their bracket. They faced Calverton SC from Maryland and needed a tie or better. The first goal of the game came from Chris Martin, as he soared over a defender and put his head to a Kevin Lawson free kick. This lead did not hold up long, as a Calverton forward's serious exaggeration of 'simulation' in the box gave them an undeserved penalty. However, determined to come out with a victory, the Panthers kept pushing, until Musa Kamara beat the keeper with a pretty and finesse chip-shot. Though Calverton equalized a second time, the Panthers held the tie throughout persistent referee incapacity and dirty Calverton play, giving themselves the final score they needed to come out of the tournament as victors.
