LIGHTNING WINER UNDER 10 BOYS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP



May 21, 2007 - On Saturday, May 19, the Lower Merion Lightning (Under 10A boys) defeated the Ukrainian Nationals 4-0 to win the EPYSA State Cup championship A total of 22 teams competed in the tournament. Teams were put into four team brackets for first round play. The Lightning defeated Philadelphia Soccer Club 2-1, Yardley-Makefield 1-0 and the United German Hungarians 2-1.

The sweep of bracket play put the Lightning into the quarterfinals against Fox Chase. Unlike the bracket play games, the Lightning finally won by more than one goals as they recorded a 3-1 victory to advance to the semifinals where they met Warrington. Playing in top form, the Lightning easily disposed of Warrington 3-0. The championship game against the Ukrainians saw the Lightning continue to play better and better soccer as they put together a very convincing 4-0 win. The highlight of the game was goalkeeper Will Rosenbaum’s long punt downfield which took a big bounce over the opposing goalie and went into the net. Rosenbaum was also solid in goal as he recorded his third shutout of the tournament. Also scoring in the championship game were A.B. Winter, Josh Katz and Kyle Gaeffke. Midfielder Kevin Bendesky had two assists in the state final.

LMSC would like to congratulate the Lightning on their excellent spring season and wish them the best of luck as they go forward. The Lightning are coached by Adrian Cox who is also the head coach for the Episcopal Academy boys varsity.
