MANY LMSC ALUMS PARTICIPATE AT NATIONALS

August 1, 2006 - Each year, state championships are held for all travel team age groups Under 9 through Under 19. At Under 12 and above, the teams winning state championships advanced to the Region One championships. This is an annual competition involving the state champions from Maine through West Viriginia. This year's Region One championships were held in Virginia Beach. Regional champions ages Under 14 through Under 19 advanced to the national championships which were held this year in Des Moines, Iowa. There are four regions in the USA, meaning only four teams in each age group compete in the National Championships.

Many former LMSC players, now playing for the nationally recognized FC Delco club played in the National Championships in late July.

The Under 15 state champion FC Delco Hammerheads won the Region One Championship and came in second in the nation, losing in the national championship game to So Cal United from California. The Hammerheads played in Lower Merion Soccer Club from Under 8 through Under 12. They moved to the FC Delco Club in order to get better national exposure and be better seen by college coaches throughout the country. The Hammerheads won the Region One title in 2003 and 2004. They won it again in July, 2006 to qualify for Nationals in Des Moines.

The Hammerheads weree coached by LMSC coaches Adrian Cox (Under 10 LMSC Lightning) and Biff Sturla (Under 12 LMSC Cannibals) and features many local area players, including players from Lower Merion High School (Jordan Obrant, Gregg Robbins and Danny DiLullo), Harriton High School (Alec Weiss) and Haverford School (David Dubow and Jordan LeBlanc).
