MUSTANGS REPEAT AS DELCO LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

November 20, 2005 - The Mustangs followed their 10 - 0 regular season with an exciting 1-0 win over Marple Newtown. The championship game was tightly contested, with the Mustangs finally breaking the deadlock with an unassisted goal by forward Ian Pearlstein with less than five minutes to go in the contest.

With the Mustangs, led by experienced coach Zed Shara, and assisted by Alan Diehl, they were in control in almost every game throughout the season. Forwards Ian Pearlstein and Alex Moshal led the team in scoring, each often having multiple goal games. Their success in scoring was often helped by being fed by the strong midfield of Spencer Ivey, Nick Rhodes, Marec Serlin and Sam Richman.

Keeper Andrew Webb wasn’t often tested because of a solid defensive core of Nathaniel Diehl, Matt Bernstein and Nick DiCicco. However, when the opponents were able to actually get a off a shot, he always came up with a big save. He even kept opponents from gaining any momentum on more than one occasion by stopping penalty kicks. The team recorded four shutouts and had only six goals scored against them all year.

By the end of the season, the Mustangs were playing well together as a team. One parent remarked at the championship game that they seem to be reading each others’ minds with their passing. Zack Geaneotes and Charlie Foltz were always big play makers by stopping an offensive rush of the opponents, or by finding the open forward for a breakaway. Ryan Flynn, one of the two lefties on the team, patrolled the left side of the defense, and made it miserable for other teams to get by him. He also played forward in several games, scoring on one tremendous shot from outside the box.

Certainly one of the most exciting games of the year was the 3-2 win over Ridley on November 5th. The team played the entire second half with only 10 players and was down 2-1 with just under ten minutes to go. A tough physical match, with the winning goal was scored by Marec with just three minutes left. The following week, the Mustangs met Ridley with the full team and beat them 5-0.

The season culminated in the championship game that showcased the hard work by the team and coaches all year. They learned how to play together and to use their finely honed soccer skills to wear down, and ultimately beat each one of their opponents. Congratulations to the team and to the coaches for a job well done and good luck in the indoor season!
